Pulse Urban Bike - Teague

"150 years of continuous/passionate refinement have resulted in bicycle components that are both ultra efficient and ultra reliable. And yet this passionate perfection hides in plain sight. The power of design is its ability to create (animal) magnetism around compelling ideas in relevant context. Dana Krieger, Industrial designer at Teague presents a tribute to the triangle. A reinterpretation of an icon, which unifies individual components into a coherent statement in tune with contemporary needs (and attitudes). Equal parts gym membership, fashion statement and Kyoto pact contributor - Pulse is a transportation solution in synch with the needs of today's urban denizen." Features include electric turn signals controlled from the handlebars, a luminescent frame that lights up when you need it and counterweight pedals that always sit the right way round. source: www.pagegangster.com

Perforated House, Brunswick - Kavellaris Urban Design (KUD)

"Quirky and full of unexpected design choices, this Australian residence by Kavellaris Urban Design, asserts that holding onto old architectural aesthetics can be both silly and unsustainable. The Perforated House’s high-tech, translucent exterior is etched with ornamental details to pose commentary on contemporary homes that adhere strongly to traditional architectural typologies — the terrace home, in this particular case. Observing that the dated aesthetic has “a stronger link with romanticized nostalgia rather than good design,” the architects set out to re-work the traditional terrace home, creating this case study house with an ironic and more eco-friendly new aesthetic for building.

Upper-level bi-fold doors allow the home to transition from public to private, space to void — and then back. Transitioning between different facades, the architects said, “By day, the building is heavy and reflective but by night inverts to a soft, translucent, permeable light box.” To further transform the home, the architects incorporated movable walls throughout the interior of the home, allowing the residents to open or enclose spaces as they please.

As the architects were frustrated by the un-sustainability of the traditional terrace house, they were sure to take advantage of eco-friendly techniques. These include: exterior bi-fold doors that provide the benefits of cross ventilation, a tiny lot at 5.5 meters x 14.4 meters and the use of solar hot water.

And if you love it — you’ll be happy to know that the house is up for sale!"

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium - COX Architects

"The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, designed by COX Architects with engineering assistance from Arup, and from Norman Disney & Young — is a $200-million boutique rugby and soccer stadium with a capacity of 31,000. Pride in sporting venues is also part of the very culture that supports sports so proactively. Melbourne expects its new Rectangular Stadium to not only contribute to the city’s sporting life, but also to be a focal point of the city’s Olympic Sports Park and Entertainment Precinct — only a short walk from the city center.

Fractured architecture is slowly becoming synonymous with 21st-century architecture in Melbourne. From the honeycomb concrete façade of Federation Square, to the steel tubing we recently wrote about on the city’s new recital centre, the bio-frame roof of the Rectangular Stadium already looks like it belongs. The roof will be covered with thousands of LED lights that can shine in many colors. They will be programmed to follow patterns that mimic the crowd’s energy during a match — soccer with Victory or rugby with Storm — or any other game or event." source: www.thecoolhunter.com.au

l House - Moomoo Architects

"Polish architecture practice moomoo architects have designed a house that will be clad entirely in a plastic insulating material normally used for roofing. To be located in Łódź, Poland, the design is based on that of traditional Polish houses but the roof rises steeply towards one end of the building. One wall will protrude from the residence at an angle to accommodate planning laws that mean the building’s facade should be built parallel to the boundary of the site."

Apple Store - Melbourne

'One of Melbourne's finest examples of art deco architecture from the 1930s looks set to be knocked down to make way for an iconic new Apple Store.

Lonsdale House, on Lonsdale Street near Caledonian Lane, will be bulldozed to make way for a new CBD shopping centre as part of the redevelopment of Myer.

The shopping centre, which will be called Emporium Melbourne, has been given the green light by the Victorian State Government.

Darren Steinberg, head of property at developer Colonial Global Asset Management, confirmed that the company was in talks with Apple over the iPhone maker becoming the flagship tenant.

An Apple store appeared as the hero store in the artist's interpretation of the completed project, and Colonial has already leased retail space to Apple in Melbourne's Chadstone and Sydney's Chatswood Chase shopping centres.'
