'Landor' rebrands Melbourne

"The new 'M' logo replaces the leaf logo which had been in use for the past fifteen years. the city's mayor robert doyle says 'the new design will become an icon for melbourne, synonymous with the modern, vibrant, cool city melbourne is today and will continue to be in the future.' The new design hopes to achieve better identification of services the city of melbourne is delivering, greater brand impact and flexibility, more cost and time-effective in-house design and brand management.

'It was deemed necessary to rebrand when an extensive audit and review revealed the ‘leaf’ logo to be outdated. after 15 years this was understandable. the creation of one strong masterbrand is an opportunity to build a new identity that resonates with our staff, our community, our customers and for the city of melbourne as an local, national and international destination. looking at other cities such as london or new york you see the strength of their single brand.

The ‘leaf’ was found to be weak when stacked up against other national and international city brands and there was also little understanding of what the ‘leaf’ represented. In addition, the proliferation of additional logos resulted in a lack of shared understanding of the city of Melbourne exposing a fragmentation of our identity.'"

I like it, who cares if it cost $240,000, it was significantly cheaper than other corporate rebrandings.

Melbourne Convention Center Achieves 6 Star Green Star Certification

"Australia has stunning beaches, some of the best natural landscapes, fascinating wildlife, beautiful people and now the world’s greenest convention center - how is any other country supposed to compete with that? Well, it’s going to be tough because the newly designed Melbourne Convention Centerhas set a new standard for green design. Officially opened in June of this year, the center has received the highest rating to ever be bestowed upon a convention center, a 6 Star Green Star certification!

Having a building on you project list dubbed as “one of the greenest large buildings in the world” can’t be such a bad thing for NH Architecture and Woods Bagot, the architects behind the design of the Melbourne Convention Center. Their design of the center has developed and implemented a number of new and innovative green solutions ranging from chilled floor slabs and displacement ventilation to reduce the need for air-conditioning; to the installation of a black-water treatment plant that will recycle waste water for use in toilets, cooling towers and landscape irrigation; to solar thermal panels that deliver hot water for all public amenities; to the use of sustainably-harvested timber veneer throughout the center."

Augmented Reality Business Card

Wowser!

Watt Electric Bike

"The WATT electric bicycle uses a battery and pedal power to speed through city streets. French designer Jerome Blanchard fit the bike with Drive Shaft Technology, which presumably sends power to the wheels when the biker pedals. There should even be enough spare energy created to power a GPS or phone through an attached USB port, and some gadgets could be compatible with trip information, such as speed, route and location. Meanwhile, an electromagnetic shock absorber keeps the ride smooth, an anti-lock brake system ensures safety, an a special direction access allows for tight handling."

I'll take one of these.

BMW S.X CONCEPT

"The BMW S.X concept by designer Iulian Bumbu, a graduate of the Transportation Design Course at the Scuola Politecnica di Design (SPD) in Milan. This BMW S.X Concept represents the next generation luxury sports coupe from BMW could look like. And it would be well positioned to take over where the current 6 Series BMW. This design has high-mount brake lights incorporated into the edges of the rear window and the lateral vents located just behind the front wheels."

Melbourne Recital Centre - ARM

"Ashton Raggatt McDougal (ARM) architects completed the design of the Melbourne Recital Centre and the neighbouring Melbourne Theatre Company helping to transform the formerly derelict Southbank area of the city to the dynamic district it has now become. The firm has been so successful in their designs of the two buildings that they have been honoured with the 2009 Victorian Architecture Medal winning highest accolades in three categories for public architecture, interior design as well as urban design.

In a country where the two largest cities compete for just about everything, is Melbourne set to de-thrown Sydney for a higher quality performance space? Granted we’re not here to critique Utzon’s Opera House, but we are prepared to say that ARM, in collaboration with Arup Acoustics, designed a dynamic and original 1000-seat performance space and 150-seat Salon. “The fusion of architectural and acoustic design throughout the development of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall has produced a visually and aurally exciting hall,” a designer from Arup explains. “Based on the proportions of the classic shoe-box shaped European concert hall, the geometry has been enhanced to provide greater acoustic intimacy and improved sightlines for the entire audience.”

The design for the Melbourne Theatre Company begins with the dramatic façade: 3D iridescent steel tubing folds and bends against black aluminium cladding – just as an actor brings performance to life against a dark backdrop. The interior is comprised of the Sumner Theatre, a 500-seat hall noticeably without a balcony or mezzanine space, but still allowing exceptional site lines to the stage regardless of where your season tickets land you. The most striking element inside the main theatre is the Word Wall – 70 quotes from different plays are illuminated when the stage is dark. The building also houses a full rehearsal hall that can be used as an event space or a smaller performance space, as well as a café and bar at the front of the house."

Acropolis Museum - Bernard Tschumi

Best digital art display I can remember seeing, good reason to go to Athens, minus the actual acropolis.
